Liverpool Beat Man United’s Record After Spartak Moscow Win

Man United vs liverpool

Liverpool are now the premier league club that have scored the highest goals in the group stage in Champions League history, breaking a record held by Manchester United for 19 years.

The Anfield club thrashed Spartak Moscow 7-0 in their final group stage game on Wednesday night at Anfield, and apart from sailing through triumphantly to the final 16, Jurgen Klopp’s side also smashed Manchester United’s Champions League record.

It was an exciting night in front of thousands of Liverpool fans. Phillipe Coutinho scored a hat-trick, Sadio Mane a brace, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino also scored at Anfield.

Liverpool ended the first round with 23 goals, overtaking the 20 goals scored by Manchester United in 1998 when Sir Alex Ferguson was still boss at the club.

The red devils were able to achieve the feat in a group with the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, and they went ahead to win the Champions League in that season – including the premier league trophy.

This season, however, after all six group stage games played by all teams in the Champions League, Paris Saint Germain are the club with the highest goals in the group stage – scoring 25 goals.

Jurgen Klopp will hope Sadio Mane, Phillipe Coutinho, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino will help him go further in the Champions League this season.
