It appears Liverpool will no longer be running after top target Virgil Van Dijk anymore this summer following recent statements from Jurgen Klopp – leaving the way clear for Antonio Conte’s side.
Liverpool have been linked with the Netherlands international for months and at some points, it caused a dispute between the reds and the Saints.
Liverpool were forced to offer a public apology to Southampton after Southampton threatened to report Liverpool to the FA for approaching the defender illegally. But peace had reigned between the two English clubs, Liverpool reignited their interest in the player, but have nevertheless been able to make progress on the deal.
And Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking recently about his team, has indicated that the pursuit of Van Dijk has been dropped, stating that he is happy with his current options.
‘Liverpool have four centre-backs. I don’t think we need more,’ Klopp said.
The German manager has centre-backs Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip, Ragnar Klavan, and Joe Gomez in his team, and has been able to utilise his players properly to do well in their recent preseason games.
‘Just at the moment I am fine. We cannot force things and won’t get a defender just because a player is available.’ he said.
The Dutch defender was banished from Southampton’s first-team which has made him very desperate to seal a move. With the latest development, it appears Stamford Bridge is where he is destined to play this season.
