Klopp: I’d be a ‘real idiot’ to buy after one loss

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said he would have to be “a real idiot” to rush into the transfer market purely on the basis of Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Burnley.

Klopp has made several signings this summer, including Sadio Mane, Georginio Wijnaldum and Ragnar Klavan, but he has so far failed to bring in a new left-back despite serious questions over Alberto Moreno’s form, with James Milner used in the position at Burnley.

Liverpool beat Arsenal 4-3 in their Premier League opener before suffering the surprise defeat to Burnley, and Klopp said after that loss: “If one game should change my mind then I would be a real idiot. If that was the case, how could I be here?”

He dismissed concerns that Liverpool, who had 81 percent possession at Turf Moor, had lost too many 50-50 challenges in midfield.

Addressing reporters, he said: “I know you would all buy a left-back, but a midfielder?

“I love your job because we can have the ball and then we need to be the best fighters. Emre Can was on the bench — he had a back problem — [and] Lucas Leiva is injured, and you ask me for a hard midfield player.”

The former Borussia Dortmund boss has said it “makes more sense” to create the right atmosphere for success than to “try to buy success with a vengeance” and, with the sale of Christian Benteke the Reds have actually made a profit so far this summer.

Asked if he will spend money, he said: “The answer is I don’t know — we will see.”

Discussing the reasons for the defeat, he added: “The whole game is explained by the two goals.

“We can say that they scored two and we could have scored five. We can ask if it’s fair that they had two good moments, we had 500 and it was 2-0. But it’s our job to get the result which we deserve. And obviously on Saturday we deserved a defeat.

“I don’t like it. I was really angry, especially around the first goal, because it was so unnecessary. I was not angry at half-time, because it makes no sense then. If being angry makes sense, then I can be angry like this [snaps fingers].

“Tomorrow, when I feel I need to put the finger on what went wrong, I will do it. But will I go to Clyney [Nathaniel Clyne] and ask him: ‘Tell me which idea you had around this first pass?’ No.

“I could have asked last week Phil [Coutinho] and Adam [Lallana], but it makes no sense. They know it already, that this is not the pass we want to play. When angriness helps, I’m angry, but I’m not just angry because.”
