Former Liverpool man: How Chelsea have undermined Arsene Wenger at Arsenal

Jamie Carragher explains why Chelsea‘s success this season is damaging for Arsene Wenger at Arsenal

The former Liverpool defender is of the opinion that Chelsea’s success has undermined Arsene Wenger at Arsenal this term.

Chelsea are currently sitting at the top of the Premier League table and are 10 points clear of their rivals Arsenal who are in fourth position.

Last season, The blues finished in tenth place in the top flight. However right now, new manager Antonio Conte has managed to transform the club into title favourites.

Antonio Conte upon his arrival at the club completed five signings in a bid to strengthen his squad. He brought in the likes of David Luiz, N’Golo Kante and Marcos Alonso – all have proved to be successful acquisitions.

Arsenal on the other hand snapped up four new players in deals worth well over £90m. However the Emirate club have failed to make up ground on the Stamford Bridge side despite a second-place finish last season.

Carragher writing in his Daily Mail column ahead of Arsenal’s clash against Sutton United in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday night said:

“Another issue for Wenger is this: since Mesut Ozil arrived in September 2013 for £42million, Arsenal have invested £222.4m on new players, with signings including Alexis Sanchez (£35m), Granit Xhaka (£34m) and Shkodran Mustafi (£35m) arriving.

“That is when there can be no more excuses about Arsenal not being able to compete financially, as Wenger used to protest; the net spend of £188.6m has only been eclipsed by the Manchester clubs.

“When there is an outlay of that extent, fans have every right to believe they should be closer to the title. To make matters worse, it looks like Chelsea are going to make the leap from 10th last season to claim their second title in three years. They will do that with a net spend of just £7.1m.”

The blues won the Premier League title in 2014-15 season before they finished in tenth place last term.
