David De Gea : From hero to zero

De Gea

Prior to Edwin Van der Sar’s retirement, there were questions over who would become the goalie’s replacement.

The Red Devils enjoyed great services from the retiring goalkeeper but they couldn’t count on him anymore as he was about to call it quits on his football career.

The then manager Sir Alex Ferguson was very unrest due to the crisis that was about to befall his goalkeeping department.

The Scottish manager was linked with numerous goalkeepers including De Gea, Courtois, Joe Hart and other impressive goaltenders as he intensified his search for a Van Der Sar’s worthy replacement.

De Gea came to Fergie’s rescue

After so many talks and many terminated deals, the Red Devils eventually signed David de Gea from Atletico Madrid in 2010-11 season for a fee which was said to have worth £18.9 million.

There was a sigh of relief from Ferguson as he successfully found a lasting solution to what could have been a massive crisis for his team.

De Gea’s early life at Old Trafford

At first, the young goalkeeper wasn’t given game time as he was made to learn from the retiring Van Der Sar.

The 2010-11 season ended but the youngster couldn’t make his competitive Premier League debut.

In the 2011-12 season, the Spaniard became the club’s first choice goaltender as his predecessor finally retires from the game.

It’s of no use listing all of his wonderful outings with the team, the bottom line is that he’s been an amazing player with the team.

He’s won some laurels with the team and also on a personal level. Some of his awards include three Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award, four Save of the Season awards and five Manchester United player of the year award.

De Gea’s fall from grace to grass

It all began during the Russia 2018 after the end of last season.

After enjoying another great and productive season with the Red Devils, many hoped to see the best of De Gea in Spain jersey at the Mundial.

Surprisingly, the goalie fumbled throughout Spain’s participation in the competition.

Indeed, the 28-year-old was rated one of the worst goaltenders in Russia.

2018-19 season De Gea’s worst season at Old Trafford

Many thought things would get better for the Spaniard as the season progresses, however, they seem to have made a very wrong assumption.

De Gea is still in his dwindled form and he’s not showing any sign of improvement at all.

In United’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at the early part of the season, the Spaniard was at fault for Eden Hazard’s goal from tight angle.

On a normal day, an in-form De Gea will prevent the ball from sailing into the top corner.

Manchester United 2 VS 2 Arsenal

The goalkeeper was at fault once again as he gifted the Gunners their first goal of the net.

Shkodran Mustafi’s wonderful header was misjudged by the goaltender and the ball managed to find its way into the net.

Fans, who had great respect for the player, couldn’t help but slam him for his recent shambolic performances.

De Gea must quickly return to the form he’s known for, else, his place will be taken by hungry and determined Sergio Romero.
