Manchester United are set to offer David De Gea a new deal at Old Trafford that will make him one of the highest paid players in the continent.
But manager Jose Mourinho has made it known that his side will first trigger a one-year extension clause in the goalkeeper’s current contract before he put pen on paper for the new contract.
The former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper was heavily linked with a move back to the Spanish capital after Real Madrid almost completed a deal for him in 2015.
He ended up signing a new four-year deal with the red devils, with the option of another year after the move failed to materialise.
The Spaniard is one of the best goalkeepers in the world – and he is even regarded as the best in the premier league by many. He has won the Man United player of the year plague in three of the last four terms.
Real Madrid are still keen on signing the Spain international, but the red devils are ready to offer him a new long-term deal to keep him at Manchester, and manager Jose Mourinho made it known that the club will first trigger the one-year extension clause in his deal.
Once the clause is triggered, De Gea will stay at Old Trafford till 2020 – even if he failed to sign the new deal with Manchester United.
