Chelsea agree £60 million deal to sign Costa replacement

Alvaro Morata

Premier League Champions Chelsea have agreed on a deal to sign Real Madrid and Spain striker Alvaro Morata for about £60m.

The Spaniard must now agree personal terms and pass a medical to complete the move.

Morata, 24, would be Chelsea’s’ fourth signing of the summer transfer window, after former Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger, and Tiemoue Bakayoko.

The striker scored 20 goals last campaign after rejoining Real Madrid from Serie A Champions Juventus.

Morata won the Spanish La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, but the majority of his appearances were from the bench.

The striker could replace Diego Costa, who says he has been told by Chelsea boss Antonio Conte that he is no longer in the Blue’s plans.

Premier League rival Manchester United had been interested in the Spain international striker prior to signing Romelu Lukaku from Everton for an initial £75m.

Morata joined Real Madrid’s youth team in 2008 and was handed his senior debut aged 18 in 2010.

The 6ft 3in forward moved to the Serie A in 2014, netting 27 goals in two seasons for Serie A Champions Juventus, winning both League title and the Coppa Italia on two occasions and playing a part in the 2015 UEFA Champions League final.

Real Madrid exercised a buy-back clause in June 2016 to take him back to the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Spaniard has played 20 matches for Spain, scoring 9 goals, since his international debut back in 2014.
