Ryan Giggs is unlikely to accept a lesser position under the ex-Chelsea manager following nearly 30 years at the club But his next move will be finalised within days when he meets the Special One face-to-face. Mourinho is still completing his backroom staff after taking over from Louis van Gaal at United for the new season. Portuguese coach Rui Faria, who worked with him at Chelsea, will be the main assistant — the role Giggs had under LVG. Giggs, 42, is said to be unlikely to accept a lesser role. He may now choose to go into management on his own, two years after hanging up his boots to focus on coaching. Giggs had dressing-room support to take over as manager from LVG. But United went for Mourinho to try to get the club back on track as title … [Read more...]
Keylor Navas reveals frustration about his failed Man United move
The Real Madrid goalkeeper was set for a switch to Old Trafford last summer as David De Gea was on course to head the opposite way. But a fax machine stopped the deal being processed as Madrid failed to get their paperwork finalised before the transfer deadline. As a result, Navas stayed put at the La Liga giants while De Gea went on to pen a new four-year deal at United. The silver lining for the Costa Rican shot-stopper was his success at the Bernabeu last season, adding a Champions League medal to his accolades. But frustration was admittedly the overriding emotion less than a year ago for 29-year-old Navas. "It’s not good when something like that happens but I’m not someone who is always looking back and I don’t bear any grudges," Navas told … [Read more...]
Man United one of three clubs chasing Neymar
Real, along with Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, have reportedly sent officials to Brazil to try and broker a deal for the Barcelona frontman. Neymar is locked in contract talks with the Nou Camp club, who have told the Brazil international they will not increase their latest £10.9million-a-season offer. And United's hopes of landing the 23-year-old have been boosted after a move to Real was ruled out. “The owners of Neymar are Barcelona. Any offers that arrive must go through Barcelona,” Neymar Snr. told Fox Brasil . “We don’t have to talk about it because Neymar is under contract and the club know everything. “The speculation is huge and it’s clear that Neymar is always involved in it. The fans know that several clubs are interested in … [Read more...]
Roma rejects United offer for Kostas Manolas
Kostas Manolas has attracted interest from Man United but the Giallorossi are prepared to offer him a new deal which will see him remain at the capital club. After spending the past two seasons in the Italian capital, Kostas Manolas is expected to extend his stay at Roma after the club turned down an offer from Manchester United. The Giallorossi are now set to extend his contract by one year, until 2020 and Manolas can expect his salary to rise to over €3 million per season, including bonuses. A bid of around €35 million was submitted by the Red Devils, according to Corierre dello Sport, which was swiftly rejected by the club’s hierarchy. The Greek international became an integral part of Giallorossi, helping the club to a runners-up place in 2015, … [Read more...]
Man United not giving up on signing Paul Pogba
Manchester United are continuing to pursue Paul Pogba as Jose Mourinho sets out his intent to secure at least four summer signings. Mourinho has prioritised signing Pogba but reports suggest the manager is doubtful whether or not the club can secure one of the most highly-sought players of the moment. Nonetheless, United remain confident that they will be able to make a statement signing as the club prepares for the new season. Sources told Manchester Evening News that Mourinho expects the club to clinch a deal that “will make everyone sit up straight”. The club has already signed Ivory Coast defender Eric Bailly – who joined from Villarreal – but Mourinho continues to target a right midfielder, as well as a striker and a central midfielder. Pogba’s … [Read more...]
Euro 2016: De Gea not bothered about criticism after Croatia poor showing
David de Gea has shrugged off criticism after Spain's disappointing 2-1 Euro 2016 defeat to Croatia and is determined to help the team overcome Italy in their last-16 showdown. After the Croatians sent two goals hurtling past the Manchester United 'keeper on Tuesday, he received a rating of four out of 10 from leading Spanish sports newspaper Marca. "De Gea has lost his aura. De Gea could have done better in the two goals," Marca said. The 25-year-old had kept a clean sheet in Spain's opening two victories, a 1-0 triumph over the Czech Republic and a 3-0 defeat of Turkey but the defeat to Croatia left Spain second in Group D. Taking to social media to slam critics, De Gea tweeted: "Only those that lose enthusiasm are defeated. Thank you for the … [Read more...]
Euro 2016: Wayne Rooney thinking only about England
Wayne Rooney is not bothered that Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have joined England in the Euro 2016 knockouts. All four sides progressed from the group phase, completing an unprecedented success story for the British Isles. With so many links between the neighbouring nations, football fans have enjoyed watching familiar faces celebrating a shared triumph in France but Rooney put a dampener on the collegiate spirit. Asked if he was willing the other three teams on, the England skipper said: “Not really. For us we’re happy England are through. “Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are competitors to us. “So I’m not bothered if they’re through or not to be honest.” … [Read more...]
