Confirmed! Spanish club considering move for Arsenal defender

Nacho Monreal

Arsenal and Spain defender Nacho Monreal has reportedly emerged as a potential transfer target for Spanish club Athletic Bilbao.

The defender has spent the past four-and-a-half years at the North London club, while he played 43 matches during the most recent season where he emerged as one of the Emirate club’s most consistent players.

However, after the Emirate club’s signing of Sead Kolasinac from Bundesliga club Schalke 04, Monreal may find himself as the second choice at the left-back position, while defenders Kieran Gibbs and Cohen Bramall are other options for Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

Don Balon reported that Bilbao are set to make an approach for the 31-year-old defender as they look to strengthen at the back, especially their full-back position, ahead of the new season.

Full back Monreal is no stranger to top-flight football back in his homeland Spain, with a total of seven seasons being spent at La Liga clubs like Osasuna and Malaga respectively.

The Spain International defender still has two years left on his existing deal at Arsenal, but he may be permitted to leave the North Londoners should the Spanish side meet Arsenal’s valuation and demand.

Monreal is also one of the older members of Arsenal’s squad at 31, and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is a huge fan of the defender who has proved himself to be more than capable in his new system of three defenders at the back.
