Arsene Wenger reveals why Arsenal didn’t sign PFA Player of the Year this summer

Having missed out of Champions League football this season for the first time in Wenger’s 21-year reign, the Gunners have been active in the transfer window, signing Sead Kolasinac on a free and breaking their club transfer record for Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon.

Arsenal have also shown interest in some forwards, including Monaco duo Thomas Lemar and Kylian Mbappe, and another man they’ve been linked with is Riyad Mahrez.

The 2015/2016 PFA Player of the Year shone like million stars as the Foxes pulled off a remarkable Premier League title victory and still scored ten goals last season as Leicester City finished in 12th place on the Log.

The 2017/2018 season may be on already in England, but that doesn’t mean that the Algerian won’t have left Leicester by the end of the summer transfer window.

Mahrez signed a new four-year contract last summer but is thought to be keen on a transfer away from the King Power Stadium, with Inter Milan and Roma both interested.

AS Roma have reportedly had a bid for Mahrez rejected by Leicester, but Arsene Wenger’s latest comments suggest that the Gunners were never serious about their bid to sign him.

Arsnene Wengers said:

“I rate him(Mahrez) as a player but we have similar types with Alex Iwobi, Mesut Ozil and now Jack Wilshere back. We have plenty of the same type of player.”
