Jamie Redknapp says Arsenal and France international Olivier Giroud is ‘too good’ to be utilized as a super substitute by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.
The French striker scored a dramatic late winning goal against Leicester City on Friday night as Arsenal started the 2017/2018 season with a win.
Arsene Wenger’s team had been trailing 3-2 with just seven minutes left in the highly pulsating match, but midfielder Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud ensured the Gunners and host sealed a surprising victory.
The Frenchman only started 11 league matches last campaign and appeared set for another deputy role during the 2017/2018 League season.
Lacazette was signed as Wenger’s first-choice number 9 earlier in the summer transfer window and has impressed following his £52m transfer to the Emirate Stadium.
But Redknapp believes the striker is too good for a bench role at Arsenal and admits the French tactician has a hard job on his hand to keep his strikers happy.
Redknapp told the Daily Mail, ‘It was interesting to see Giroud look down his nose at suggestions he is a super substitute after his winning goal for Arsenal.’
Arsene Wenger insisted he ‘loves’ the striker after the Leicester City victory but admits he gave him the chance to leave earlier this summer.
Speaking to Sky Sports news, Wenger said: ‘I love the man and the player (Giroud). He is a fantastic and committed player who loves the club.
