Kyle Walker

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has confirmed the Blues ‘tried to buy’ defender Kyle Walker before the full-back completed a move from Tottenham Hotspur to Manchester City earlier this summer.

The reigning Premier League champions have been hunting for a right-back this summer transfer window, with Danilo, Dani Alves, Alex Sandro, and Sergi Roberto all linked with transfers to the West London club in recent weeks.

The Blues were not known to be interested in signing Walker, who went on to join Manchester City for a fee of £45million (in a deal expected to rise to £50m) but Antonio Conte has revealed Chelsea’s pursuit of the England full-back.

Conte is understood to need a major upgrade to Nigerian star Victor Moses, after converting the striker to the right-back role last term.

Antonio Conte, in far away Singapore on the second leg of Chelsea’s pre-season Asia Tour, wants to sign at least three more players to reinforce his squad before the transfer window slams shut.

And speaking about 27-year-old Walker after Chelsea’s 3-2 loss to Bayern Munich at Singapore, the Italian boss said:

‘If you want Walker, you know that Walker is expensive. We tried to buy Walker’

He also complained about how hard it is in the transfer market for teams that intend improving their squads, and how football clubs are now demanding huge fees for their players.
