After Italy secured their spot in the next round of the European Championship , Antonio Conte has revealed his delight in having surpassed the scepticism that had previously surrounded the squad.

A dramatic 1-0 victory over Sweden on Friday means that the Azzurri will now advance to the Round of 16 after only just two Euro 2016 matches, and the passionate tactician has since praised his Nazionale squad for suppressing the tough Swedish opposition.

“First of all I think that this satisfaction should be enjoyed by all,” said Conte to the press. “Only very few people thought that we could qualified after just two matches.

“A lot of people had doubted our advancement to the next stage and this is another great satisfaction.

“The lads deserve it, especially after the first half when there were some anxious moments. Sweden were very physical and we did not deal with them in the best possible manner.

“However, I don’t think they ever had a shot on-target and Buffon did not have to make a save.”

In correspondence with the previous suspicion concerning his squad, Conte also addressed the doubt that had surrounded goalscoring hero, Eder, revealing that he selected his players based solely on his personal perspective.

“It was not just him who was doubted,” Conte added. “There were lots of players who had come under question.

“However, the only thing that interested me in my selection was what I actually saw. How I viewed them in my eyes and beyond just a few games.

“I chose those who could give the biggest help to the team. He was determined in qualification and we hope he can continue like this.”

Finally, the ex-Juventus boss has called upon all Azzurri supporters to express their national pride during their forthcoming fixtures, whilst also admitting he will play some of his fringe players against the Republic of Ireland.

“For us it is fantastic,” Conte concluded. “There is still the possibility of improvement and now I will gave some time to those players who deserve to play due to what they have done in training.

“Furthermore, we have reached an objective that was previously discussed. We now need further passion, especially from our supporters in Italy.

“During the matches I want the fans to wear the blue shirt with pride. This will prove to be a beautiful image. This group, myself included, have a strong affinity to this jersey and we feel the responsibility of representing the country.”
