Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield at the end of January was a typical result that champions managing to grind out.Chelsea could have won the game, but a missed late penalty by Diego Costa.

Samba star David Luiz gave the blues the lead with a brilliant free-kick in the first half. Liverpool goalie Simon Mignolet and the rest of Liverpool’s defence were caught off guard by the kick. They thought Willian would be the one who would take the free-kick after the winger placed the ball down and marched into position – but Luiz was the one who stepped up and smashed the ball home from 25 yards out.

While we thought it was an act perfectly planned by the two Brazilians, we were wrong – because Willian too admitted he was surprised.

When the duo appeared on Chelsea TV show Friday Night Live and the topic of Luiz’s goal came up, Willian was asked if he thought the defender was going take the free-kick, and he said: “No, no, no.”

He added: “I think, ‘he’s crazy. What are you going to do?’. He scored a beautiful goal, but it was a surprise for everyone, and for the camera as well.”

When asked what he would have done if Luiz missed, Willian said:

“I cannot say here,” before bursting out laughing.
