Tottenham Hotspur suffered more despair on Wednesday night as midfielder Mousa Dembele suffered an injury in the 1-0 loss to Bayern Leverkusen in the Champions League.

During the match at Wembley, the midfielder had to be taken off before the end of the first half after twisting his ankle and is now a doubt to face Arsenal in the North London derby on Sunday.

The start to the season for Dembele has been a frustrating one largely due to injuries and suspension and it now seems the Belgian could be out of action for some time.

During the post-match conference, manager Mauricio Pochettino revealed that Dembele was taken off because he was injured and not because of a tactical change.

He said “He was injured. He asked me to come off, he twisted his ankle. It wasn’t tactical.”

Reacting to the defeat, an unhappy Pochettino insisted that playing at Wembley is not an excuse for the loss. He said “There is nowhere better in the world to play football. We were the problem, not Wembley.”

He added “It is embarrassing for me. After two games at Wembley, Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen, there is no excuse. We were poor and we need to find the answer in ourselves. We are very disappointed and we cannot show the performance that we have in recent weeks – that is the problem.”

“We must win, if not we can forget the Champions League. We need to improve and we don’t have too much time to do that.”
