From all indications, Manchester United want Atletico Madrid star player Saul Niguez to take over from Michael Carrick.

A recent report in The Express revealed that the 22-year-old’s progress has caught the eye of United coach Jose Mourinho. Mourinho is looking to bring in a top class holding midfielder to bring balance to his team.

Since returning to the team, Micheal Carrick has been in outstanding form and played a pivotal role in United’s current impressive form. Nevertheless, he will be out of contract at the end of the season and will also turn 36 in the summer.

It was additionally added that another 12 month contract extension has been discussed. However, Jose Mourinho would prefer bringing in a long term solution than rely on the classic midfielder.

Niguez, over the last 18 months, has emerged into a key element of Diego Simeone’s squad. He played a big impact in helping his side reach the Champions League last season.

Altletico Madrid are known to be a selling club and it is obvious they won’t mind letting go of the star player if Manchester United bring big money on the table. They would however not want him to go to La Liga rivals Barcelona or Real Madrid.
