Liverpool have to improve against German champions Bayern Munich to have a chance of going through to the next round in the Champions League according to defender Virgil Van Dijk.

The Dutch international talked about the last 16 tie between Liverpool and Bayern Munich during a press conference on Monday.

Van Dijk also pointed out the importance of an away goal against the Bavarian giants at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern Munich will have to score two goals if the Reds manage to find the back of the net.

Former Southampton and Celtic defender Van Dijk missed the first meeting between the two teams last month and he’s expected to play a big part for the Reds when both sides meet again on Wednesday night.

Liverpool and Bayern Munich played out a goalless game in the first leg of their last 16 tie played at Anfield in February.

The Merseysiders warmed up for the all-important game with the German Bundesliga leaders by beating Burnley in a Premier League clash on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp initially complained about fixture scheduling in the Premier League but his players were able to see off Burnley via a 4-2 win.

They had to come from behind to get the win that took them to within one point of league leaders Manchester City with one game left.
