Liverpool have entered the race to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk next summer transfer window, according to reports.

The Dutch centre-back has been a solid figure at the Saint Marys since he move in 2015 from Scottish giants and has attracted interest from a couple of clubs in Europe, with the likes of Everton, Manchester City and Chelsea all believed to be monitoring his situation.

Jurgen Klopp has become wary of Liverpool’s defensive frailities this season and wants to bring in new faces to his backline next summer, with reports that he has identified Van Dijk as one of his major targets.

The Reds have a good pedigree of buying Southampton’s best players, having swooped for the likes of Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Sadio Mane, Rickie Lambert and Nathaniel Clyne.

Meanwhile, on loan defender Mamadou Sakho has been an impressive figure at Crystal Palace, with suggestions that Klopp should bring in next summer despite their strained relationship.

When asked about the possibility of having the Frenchman return in his future plans, Klopp said: ‘You can imagine like all the plans we have for next season, we speak about behind closed doors,

‘In the moment when we have to say something we will say something. I see a lot of Premier League games so I see Crystal Palace too and I see how he is playing there and all this stuff.’
