Chelsea target Kalidou Koulibaly has renewed his contract with Napoli, agreeing a deal to keep him at the club for a further five years.

The Blues were known to be keen on the Senegalese defender alongside Everton and had an offer rejected by Napoli in the summer.

Koulibaly said in June talks over a new deal had stalled and he would be open to a switch to England, drawing an angry response from Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis.

The defender was retained by the club and has finally put pen to paper on a new contract running until 2021.

“I am happy to announce that Kalidou Koulibaly has renewed his contract with Napoli until 2021,” De Laurentiis posted on Twitter.

Chelsea failed to match Napoli’s valuation of the player as coach Conte instead signed Paris Saint-Germain defender David Luiz on transfer deadline day for £32m.

Conte also missed out on Juventus’ defensive duo Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini.

A January swoop for either Lazio centre-back Stefan De Vrij or Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson is supposedly on the cards.

As for Everton, they invested £12m of the £47.5m raised from John Stones’ sale to Manchester City in Swansea captain Ashley Williams
