Chelsea’s pursuit for depth in midfield and wing-back has taken a new twist, as a rather surprising new name to consider in Barcelona Youth Academy product Sergi Roberto, A natural midfielder and right back by trade, the 25-year-old is believed to be on Chelsea’s shortlist according to ESPN.

The Barcelona Youth Academy product graduated from the Academy as a central midfielder, but only had the opportunity at breaking into the team’s starting eleven as a right back last campaign after the exit of Dani Alves.

While he was not a perfect replacement for the veteran Brazilian, Sergi still managed to feature in 47 matches across all competitions.

But his place at Camp Nou is now under threat thanks to the arrival of Nélson Semedo from Benfica.

Sergi’s current deal at the club has a £37.5 million release clause included, which can be activated by the Blues if they choose to cut to the chase.

Though the talisman is likely to arrive Stamford Bridge to deputize as a right wing-back for Victor Moses, he is also a capable midfielder and his versatility would certainly fit well into the team.

Even if the Catalan were to force Chelsea into paying the release clause, he could be a worthwhile buy
