United coach Jose Mourinho is confident that midfielder Axel Tuanzebe can fill the void left by the duo of Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin in the Manchester United squad.
Schneiderlin completed a huge-money move to Everton in the January transfer window after falling out-of-favour under Mourinho at Old Trafford this season.
The French midfielder was only able to get a mere 11 minutes of Premier League football this season before making the decision to reunite with his former Southampton manager Ronald Koeman at Everton.
Dutchman Memphis on his part ended his Old Trafford nightmare after a £20m switch to Ligue 1 side Lyon after a disappointing 18 months at the Old Trafford club despite arriving with a big reputation.
Jose has now lost two players from his Red Devils squad, but the Portuguese is confident that one of the club’s academy products can step up to fill the void left by Memphis and Schneiderlin.
While speaking to Manchester United’s official website ahead of the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final on Thursday night, Mourinho firstly attested he lost Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay – two players who didn’t play many minutes or many matches for the team.
“They were two players from the squad, so we need numbers and probably Axel is one of the boys that is in the Academy who is more close to playing with us.
“So we have brought him up to give him more experience, to make the first team more natural for him in case we need him to play in the upcoming matches and month, so he can be more adapted to us.” he said.
Manchester United are still sixth-placed in the Premier League table.
