Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is lining up a shock move for Manchester United defender, Chris Smalling, according to reports.

The English centre-back has fallen out of favour at United under Jose Mourinho last season due to his inconsistent displays and injuries which saw the Portuguese criticise his attitude in training.

The imminent arrival of Victor Lindelof from Benfica has further signalled the end of Smalling’s career at the Old Trafford with reports that Mourinho wants to Swede to partner Eric Bailly in the central defence area.

Arsene Wenger is said to be a long-term admirer of Smalling’s abilities and have followed him since his days at Fulham. The Gunners are believed to be in the market for new faces as they try to bolster their squad ahead of next season.

Reports in the Sun claim that Wenger will try to lure Chris Smalling from Old Trafford in a bid to bring in an experienced player that has won titles to the Emirates.

Although, it is believed that United boss Jose Mourinho will block the move due to the longstanding rivalry between the pair.

Smalling has out come out to hint at a possible move after insisting that he is not disturbed by Mourinho’s criticisms of his attitude during the last campaign.
